Things to Do in Bellingham This Fall: A Local’s Guide

Fall in Bellingham is nothing short of magic. As the air turns crisp and the leaves blaze into shades of amber and gold, the whole region comes alive with cozy charm, outdoor adventures, and small-town celebrations that capture the essence of the Pacific Northwest. Whether you’re a local soaking it in or visiting to explore the area, here are some of the best things to do in and around Bellingham this autumn.

Pick Apples at Bellewood Farms

No fall season is complete without a visit to Bellewood Farms—a local favorite just north of Bellingham. Wander the orchard with a cup of hot cider in hand and pick your own apples right from the tree. You’ll also find a pumpkin patch, corn maze, and a farm market stocked with cider, baked goods, and local treats. Don’t miss the on-site distillery, where you can sample apple-based spirits made right on the farm.

Visit Gordon Skagit Farms

A short drive south to Mount Vernon brings you to Gordon Skagit Farms, a must-visit destination each fall. This isn’t your average pumpkin patch—it’s part art installation, part photography playground, and all pure autumn magic. Every year, the Gordon brothers transform their farm with creative displays, vintage tractors, and a stunning variety of pumpkins in every color and shape imaginable. It’s a perfect spot for fall photos (and Instagram reels).

Explore Fall Foliage on Scenic Trails

Bellingham is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, and fall adds an extra layer of wonder. Head to Whatcom Falls Park or Lake Padden for a peaceful hike among colorful leaves reflected in the water. Or, take a drive along Chuckanut Drive, where you’ll find sweeping views of Samish Bay framed by vibrant forests. Bring a thermos of coffee and make a few stops at scenic overlooks—you’ll quickly see why this stretch of highway is legendary among locals.

Cozy Up in Downtown Bellingham

After your outdoor adventures, warm up in one of Downtown Bellingham’s cozy cafés. Grab a latte from Camber Coffee, or settle in with a book at Lettered Streets Coffeehouse. If you’re hungry, fall is also a great time to explore the local food scene—try the comfort dishes at The Black Cat, Boundary Bay Brewery, or Storia Cucina.

Celebrate Halloween in Fairhaven

Historic Fairhaven Village knows how to do Halloween right. From family-friendly trick-or-treating to the annual Pumpkin Lighting Festival, the charming brick-lined streets come alive with costumes, music, and festive displays. Grab a hot cider, wander through the shops, and enjoy the small-town atmosphere that makes Bellingham so special.

The Eagles of Bow

Did you know there's a famous Eagle Tree located between Samish Island and Edison, in Bow, WA? It even has its own Google Business page

Located between Edison and Samish Island at 6414 Bayview Edison Road in Bow, is an old, tall tree with a huge eagles nest. Birdwatchers park along the road with binoculars and cameras with high-powered lenses, hoping to see the Bald Eagles in all of their glory.

Just one of the interesting things to do in Bow

How to Buy a Home in a Seller's Market

Trying to buy a home in a hot seller's market can be stressful and heartbreaking. Historically low interest rates, limited inventory of homes available for sale, and people moving out of metropolitan centers as work-from-home becomes more common are driving prices sky-high

Here are some tips that have helped my clients and I win recently.

- Be organized It sounds obvious but I cannot stress how important this is right now. Homes are selling either pending sale within hours of being listed, or they have an "offer review date" a few days after being listed, which almost always guarantees multiple offers will be submitted. Be organized with a recent Pre-Approval letter, or by having an Evidence of Funds letter if you're buying the home with cash.

- Know your budget If you're pre-approved to a set dollar amount, now is NOT the time to start shopping for homes above your budget. You're just setting yourself up for disappointment as most homes are selling at or above the asking price right now. If anything, shop about $50,000 below your maximum budget, and expect that multiple offers will drive the price past the list price.

- Submit a clean offer Assume you'll be competing against other buyers, so try to keep your offer simple and easy to accept. It's a great idea to consider paying to have the home inspected BEFORE you submit your offer, giving you the peace of mind of knowing if there are issues with the house, and showing the seller you're not going to ask for repairs.

- Sell your story Buying or selling a home can be an emotional experience. Not all sellers will be swayed by a letter (and not all listing agents will recommend their clients accept letters) but it doesn't hurt to try and explain in writing why you're so interested in buying this home. Tug their heartstrings. :)

My final tip is work with a Realtor (like myself) who will go the extra mile to find your dream home and write a winning offer
